THE THEME FOR 2017: SALT OF THE EARTH

“Salt of the Earth” Yelena Young (2016)

Salt is essential to life, a basic mineral of the earth. As one of the oldest and most ubiquitous seasonings for the human diet, salt adds and enhances taste. The thought of cooking without it is anathema. Salt preserves and sustains: we need it; we crave it. Salt sustains entire communities. Nations have gone to war over its lack. Salt is a spiritual symbol, an element of religious ritual. Salt also speaks of character: “he’s the salt of the earth,” we say.

In this year’s exhibition, we invite artists to explore the place of salt in our lives as a nutrient, a seasoning, a source of power, meaning and metaphor.
